c. 1760 Newport Tea Table

2013 Northern Woods Competition - Best Carving and Best Handwork Award winner.

This is a reproduction of the famed Nicholas Brown tea table sold at Sotheby's in 2005 and attributed to John Goddard. The hand-carved, scalloped top is from a solid piece of dense figured mahogany and is supported by a sculptural serpentine skirt which echos the top peripheral pattern. Each corner is anchored by a delicate cabriole leg that has claw feet with open claws along with an additional opening above the ball. These feet exhibit life-like tense energy in the musculature extending from the talons towards the ankle. The knee carving adopts a intaglio style and pattern which, like the ball feet, are unique to John Goddard. The finish on this piece is created from many layers of color and light distressing to give a well cared for antique glow.
